Thankfully Newt has done this sort of thing many times in the past, both back home and in Johto, and he knows how to distract and then get away from creatures once they're confused enough. The Cockatrice has fluffed itself up quite a bit and seems intent on finding the other of it's kind, poking and bobbing about in the brush as it lets out a trill of calls that sound much less offensive than the noises it was making before.

Scoping up a handful of gravel, Newt gently tosses them into the bushes in the opposite direction of where he wants to go, waiting for the Cockatrice to follow the noise before he makes a break for where he hopes his companion had traveled.
The wizard stays low and keeps his coat gathered around himself to avoid getting snagged on anything, heart pounding in his ears as he finally gets through the shrugs and--
