TEST DRIVE MEME

A. RETRIEVAL

Dreams fade slowly, and awareness returns in increments. The hum of machinery, the smell of recycled air, the murmurs of others waking up around you.

The interior of the ship has been outfitted with cots for those Biggs and Wedge retrieve from the Dream Width. Outside of the makeshift infirmary, windows set into the walls of the worn lounge area offer a view of space.

It’s time to meet your fellow new arrivals who have been brought together on Biggs and Wedge’s airship. None of you know how you came to be here or where you are going, and the door to the cockpit is locked as the pilots focus on navigating the treacherous obstacles of the Dream Width. You might as well take this moment to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers.

B. CURTI CENTER

There’s an almost overwhelming aura of excitement in the tower as researchers rush to document this unprecedented number of interdimensional travelers. Over the commotion, the leaders of the Center struggle to explain, ‘Welcome to Vaikuntha. We don’t know why you’ve been brought here, but this is your new home.’

The staff will do their best to help the off-worlders settle in. They answer the questions they can, provide maps and pamphlets about the world and the destinations within it, and even guide the arrivals to a neighborhood where housing has been provided for you. Yes, due to the strange influx of arrivals, you’ll be expected to share, but the Curti staff are doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Experiences like these bring people together. Perhaps you are the only one here from your world, but at least you are not alone in this experience. Others are right beside you, learning the same information, planning trips to visit the same new cities, checking out these Job things, and settling in to their new (temporary) homes.

C. UP IN THE SKY

There’s a whole new world to explore. It’s almost enough to distract from the fact that there’s one place you can’t go- home.

You are on an Airship, the main mode of transportation between the major cities of Vaikuntha. While the majority are owned by airlines, perhaps you hitched a ride with a friend that has their own. You can go anywhere in a matter of hours — One can only hope you don’t have motion sickness.

D. GUILDS

Proud representatives of the Guild are lined up, ready to demonstrate their skills for the new initiates. Make sure to stay behind the designated line, this might get dangerous.

So you want a new Job? You'll have to first travel to the Guilds, sign the papers, go through the orientation and introductory lectures, and get basic training. Afterwards, you can freely chat and practice with your fellow members, celebrating your new powers, and checking out your new wardrobe.

E. LET'S BE ADVENTURERS

Separated from all of your material possessions, connections, and everything you know, and really, what you’re left with is time. Better try to make the most of it.

Enough expository banter. It's explorin' time. Maybe instead of spending every day in your room, you'd rather spend it living it up in the city of Lavode, or betting on Chocobo Races in Sparks Goldsaucia. Or maybe you'd rather go and explore the caves and ruins near Arito. With Airships and Chocobos at your disposal, you can go nearly anywhere!

F. SIDEQUESTS

Maybe you’re telling yourself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ But wait, you did. At least it pays.

It all started when you checked the Quest Board.  All you wanted was a few gil to spend, and here you are in the wild, hunting for a Malboro Vine. Or maybe you are in some ancient and decrepit ruins looking for an artifact. Or you could be asked to be janitor for a week. Consider yourself lucky though, at least you don't have to do that alone.

G. GET A JOB (THE OTHER KIND)

You’ve got a Job, but Claire keeps sighing and muttering about layabout space-people not earning their keep, so it might be time to seek out Employment as well.

There are plenty of opportunities to earn some gil in Vaikuntha, no matter where you choose to settle down. Your iMog slate includes listing for employment opportunities. Hopefully you can find something you can live with so that you can start saving up for an airship or the security payment for your permanent housing.

H. MOGNET

*Ding!* You’ve got Mog-Mail!

Thankfully, you can instantaneously chat with your friends around the world thanks to you iMog Slate. And unlike old-fashioned Moogle Letters, you can even send messages to everyone in a blink of an eye! However, despite the change in technology, the old tradition of Mognet Strikes have never gone away. Nobody knows any more whether the Moogles have legitimate reasons to go on strike or if they are just lazy. But today, Mognet is down, and to get information you have no choice but going to the public boards or risk message corruption and mishandling.

I. RANDOM ENCOUNTER

The ground trembles, and out of nowhere, something hostile appears! Is that battle music playing?

You were minding your own business walking around, and suddenly monsters attacked you! Time to put to use the skills you've learned with your Jobs! Will you try to fight on your own or seek help? And remember, you die in random battle, you die FOR REAL. There’s no shame from running from enemies that are a higher level than you!

"Monitors, I guess? Never went into the cockpit myself."

Noctis shrugged, crossing his arms as he was now starting to think about it. Were Aranea here, or even the Biggs and Wedge from his star, they could have answered that far better than him. "Airships were more commonly used by my kingdom's enemies."

He gave Vax a small side glare. Of course he wasn't going to shoot the messenger. (What did he look like, a gunslinger?) But he said nothing on that. Focusing instead on: "Well, if we do, want to bet they try and leave it to us?"

"No Gladio?" she asked, honestly surprised to hear that three out of the four boys were here at all. From what she'd seen so far it was a pretty mixed batch of people and she'd just been happy to see Noctis--alive and well, for that matter. "No one outside of you, prince. Then again I haven't exactly been wanderin' around much." She looked out the window again with a thoughtful frown, kicking a foot back slightly to tap the toe of her boot against the ground.

"All I know is this ship ain't exactly the latest model of airship that we had back home so somethin' is real messed up."

It has to be the right kind of gaudy. I had a friend where someone could call him gaudy -- if they're an idiot -- but it had its charm. Of course...

[He looks over the helmet. It has some style, he has to admit. Even if he'd like it to be maybe 50% less.]

Experience with swords? I've used a few. I preferred daggers, myself.

"Ah, so similar to a tourney."

[Sort of. Except for the absence of horses, armor, and lances. And the addition of spheres.

So not much at all. Still, the idea of teams and the rules do grab his interest. And it IS important to be open to new experiences, and learning from them.]

"Yes, and... a mock-game on dry land would be appreciated. I'd like to try at least."

[And he's showing eagerness, settling into a stance already! A fighting stance true, but A for enthusiasm?]

[Castor is already saddling hers up, working with the ease of practice, even if this bird is a little bigger than the ones that she's used to.] They're sweet things but just don't spook 'em.

[A few counters over, Rebecca is having the same initial conversations with a guildmember of her own. She inspects the bow with gloved hands—she's already come equipped for the job. The information is all a little overwhelming for her, but that's precisely why Archer's lamentations reach her ears.

She could really use a distraction.]

Lame? Is that what you think of archery? You know, it's not too late to pick a new job to study. I won't tell anyone you gave up right after receiving a bow, archer's honor.

(Warning: I'm playing Ignis post-Altissia, chapter 13, so spoilers warning for those that didn't play/finish the game!)

A:

[When voices woke Ignis up instead of a distant, sharp beep of the machines, he was immediately in alert mode. More than before even. The voices, now clearer, didn't belong to people he knew and the shrills of the machines at Zegnautus Keep were gone, replaced by the soft, distant sound of the engine. Slowly sitting up and feeling around him, he realized that he was on the bed.

What happened? Where is Noct? Gladio? Prompto. They were looking for him when they stopped to rest in one of the side rooms inside of the keep. Did he actually doze away in a dangerous place like that?

He doesn't have his cane, he doesn't know where he is and he fell asleep.

The voices nearby became louder.]

"...Noct. Gladio. Are you there?"

B:

[Hearing that, now very less patient, "no" come from the Curti staff is putting Ignis into a perpetually bad mood. He's seated on one of the chairs in the Center and getting angrier by every passing second. At himself, of course, not at the staff. It is not their fault that they didn't hear anything about people he's looking for.

He pinches the bridge of his nose as the staff says in all-too-cheery voice to not strain himself and that someone will come to inform him of more details about where he will reside. Everyone tiptoeing around him is extremely... difficult to handle. He doesn't want to say 'annoying' because everyone's been pleasant but there's too much on his mind right now to take all the kindness in without a grain of salt.

Ignis just hopes that whoever his new "roommate" is will hurry up a little. It feels as if he spent an eternity waiting for them here.]

"Yeah, no kidding." He concurred, and while he still kept look at the stars, his own combat training likely shone through as he kept most of his attention on the man beside him. He wasn't the only one who likely would have been driven out of his skull if he focused on where any of the others could be or how his subjects were for too long.

"I know, right? Almost as bad as dragging mud into a recently cleaned car..." No, he totally hadn't yelled at someone for that before. Though the smile that crossed his face was both genuine, and a little sad. "Noctis, of Lucis," he replied, not bothering with his full name or who he was. Any who didn't know already didn't really need to, and stating the name of the former kingdom was more than what he'd be comfortable with. Not until he was one hundred percent certain Shiro could be trusted. "And not that I've heard, but I'll keep an ear out."

"Monitors?" Vax asks, head tilting to the side. Pre-industrial society did not leave him well-equipped for that.

He pauses for a moment, and then he folds his arms over his chest, and shakes his head. "A few people operated them on Exandria. It was a way to cross from continent to continent, aside from teleportation circles and all of that shite that the sorcerers and wizards did." Or using trees to teleport, though--

No, Vax thinks, don't think about that. Not now.

"I'm not taking that bet." He gives Noctis a sidelong glance -- then a grin. "Because there's one outcome there. Of fucking course they will. We're the adventurers, they're not."

"Thanks," he tries to mimic the advice, and it does seem to help a little. Enough that he can brace himself against the ship rail, instead of clinging onto it. "That does help a little."

"Only with a pegasus, and only then with someone else at the reigns." A second glance at their surroundings, particularly those below them, and Chrom adds. "I've also never been this high up... and I thought we were sailing in a storm at first. Turns out I was only half right."

[A man dressed like a cowboy, sporting a marshal's badge on his coat, is arguing with a small moogle with red stripes dyed in her fur. She sure was happy to see her old charge again, for about five minutes anyway, until the griping started. He's holding his Slate and is arguing with her about the employment listings, even though she doesn't seem to be countering what he's saying.]

Huh-uh. No way. I'm not startin' at the bottom again, thank you kindly. I started at the bottom in the Academy and worked my way up to Marshal. I started at the bottom in Crystallis and made it to the top of the ranks. Either this place is gonna accept my experience or I ain't signin' up. I'd rather go be a dirt farmer or whatever you do on this planet. Do they ride around on big smelly birds on this one, too?

I-I don't know, Sparks-kupo! I'm just as new as you. And-- Hey wait, didn't you tell me, kupo, that you flunked your final Academy exam? And aren't your parents high-ranking officers, kupo?

Look, just-- just give me whatever for 'em. I can't shoot worth a darn anymore here anyway. And I ain't got nothin' to charge 'em up with. Someone will think they just look cool or something and buy 'em from you, okay? Cuz they are cool. Cuz they're mine.

Noctis shook his head. "No Gladio." Which was unsettling, but he'd manage. It wouldn't be the first time his Shield wasn't present, and the last he recalled he'd also been told by the three of them to go alone. Much as it tore him up inside to have done so. Though leave it to the mechanic to point out something he'd been thinking about, but hadn't put to words just yet.

"No kidding. I've been in two before, and this is... definitely a far cry from what I've seen." Not to mention much different from Zegnautus as well. He paused, before motioning to the stars outside with a nod. "Not only that, but I don't recognize any of the constellations out there. Do you?"

Astronomy may not have been his thing (he was a history nerd in school), but even he knew enough to be able to navigate at night.

There's no recognition in Shiro's eyes when he glances at Noctis. The word is wholly unfamiliar to him. But he notes it all the same. "I've never heard of that place either. ...thank you. If you want, I can do the same for you." It's a fair trade. He wouldn't feel right if he didn't offer it.

He doubted anyone of the Empire would use the word Voltron. But he's paranoid and his instincts tell him otherwise. He sighs, crossing his arms over his chest. But, like Noctis he hasn't forgotten where the other man is and his stance. It's something better to think about than things he can't fix. "Anyway, mud or slime, all three have that chance you'll find some of it later no matter how good of a job you do."

Really far from home.

Cindy stepped back from the window and looked back towards the infirmary, arms still crossed as she kicked one foot back behind the other.

His pants are accentuated with shoes instead of hooves. His is a head devoid of antlers, and the hands at his side are lacking in claws. And he looks aloof—like his mind is somewhere else.

If only he were paying more attention. His first mistake is stepping too close to the Moogle. His second mistake is lifting his foot in a to step back only to stumble and kick (or near miss) the red-striped moogle. Either way, it's a disaster.]

Prompt A

[This place stinks. Like, literally reeks. That's Kefka's first thought, at the very least. Smells like old bummy mattress and dust webs and, worst of all perhaps, people. Still, he can't help but smile, but laugh, at the situation as he takes it in. A god, throwing destruction and judgment down on all the puny little worthless lives, stuck slumming it back out with them in some make shift, rinky dink airship.

Oh that's funny. That is, in fact, rich.

You'll have to excuse the jester laughing his head off for a moment. Usually, you'd think it'd be the job of the jester to elicit the chuckles, but getting a look at the him better...perhaps he's not the type one would often laugh at.

And if he catches anyone staring, he simply stops his laughter, biting his lip to stiffle it. And smiles back at the staring party, far far too wide.]

What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?

Prompt C

[And now the jester's on the move, stalking through the airship. The sensation is hardly new to Kefka, where it might be perhaps a bit more new, and even unsettling to others. It was boring, really, which is why it needed to be spiced up.

He slinks along the halls and rooms of the airship, managing, somehow, to often move just out of sight of his intended targets, at least, once he finds them. And when he does find them, well.

There Kefka is, immediately behind them, head craned to be right beside them.]

Now what's this?

[He says, in a mock interested tone.]

Far from home, aren't we? First time you've been in the air? Don't worry. You'll get used to being a floater.

Prompt I

[Burning people, Kefka had found, was often far more rewarding and entertaining than burning monsters. Of course, things being what they were, he'd have to wait just a little while, perhaps, before he could get the most out of that. Kefka supposed he could try to burn a few weaklings back to the worthless dust and ash they were, but with just how many goodie two-shoes were around....

It would be better to bide his time for maximum effect. Destruction was fun by its very nature. Even if he could wreak havoc only for a little while, well, he would take it, but to have it ended just too quickly, that'd be a tragedy. Or a comedy. They were interchangable, were the some thing, when you really got right down to brass tacks.

Still, even Kefka had to admit that hunting these poor slobs of monsters...geezards, they were called?...wasn't entirely without amusement. Even with how much his own power had been diminished -taking a 'job', having to regain it and all that paperwork work work, how ridiculous, the creatures were falling - and fleeing - from him at a delightful pace. Kefka cackles as he flings another ball of fire at one.]

What's wrong? Need to run already? But it's too soon and we're practically burning daylight with the fun we're having!

Prompt J

Retrieval.

[This is strange. VERY strange. So strange, in fact, that the moment Papyrus regains consciousness, he springs to his feet and swivels in a full 360 degrees.]

Frisk! Are you-

[But there's no sign of them. And, upon closer inspection... this is very much Not Hotland. Nor is it a faux court lobby. Nor is it anything particularly familiar.

His eye sockets narrow. This isn't good. This is very much not good, but perhaps Frisk woke up first? Maybe they're somewhere else. The least he can do is investigate.]

Hmmm... HMMMM... HM!

Wowie. Did Mettaton change the set? This looks so...

OH MY GOD?!

[This is... different! Very different. So different, in fact, that he's opted to start snooping around. There are a lot of strange faces. This is very odd. So intriguing! So perplexing. So puzzling! So... perpluzzling!

Any strangers are sure to be greeted by this curious nerd of a skeleton as he attempts to investigate every nook and cranny of his new surroundings. Loudly. Potentially with BOLD, CONTEMPLATIVE MONOLOGUES.]

Curti Center

[Papryus probably looks a bit silly as he wanders outside the center, trying to avoid dropping the maps, pamphlets, and other info he'd gathered from within. As he wanders about, though his eye sockets are glued to the open space above. An actual sky! He's so transfixed, in fact, that he kind of loses sight of where he's going, trips over his own boots, and whoops!

That's one very tall skeleton falling forward. Potentially on his face. Potentially into you. Either way, he falls forward with a yelp.]

...Nyeheh. My apologies! This whole place is just so incredible! Amazing! I'd almost say unbelievable, but I once got a lamp from a parallel dimension.

[...But that doesn't stop him from looking up at the sky with wonder, before realizing he really should be picking up his maps and other odds an ends. Talk about an awkward first impression.]

Random Encounter

[Papyrus may have made a mistake. You see, he stumbled upon an encounter with some skeletons. Papyrus, being a friendly fellow, thought it might be a good idea to try and negotiate. To strike up a friendly conversation with his fellow skeletal creatures.

One problem. These skeletons... aren't so friendly. And despite Papyrus' attempts to talk, they're being oddly nonverbal. And aggressive.]

Oh, come on! You're skeletons! I'm a very cool skeleton! You don't need to be shy! I, the Great Papyrus, am not a foe, but a fri-

"It's like a pane of glass that somehow has images from other places than what's on the other side of them." It was the easiest way to explain it without being able to show anyone who had no ideas for what they looked like. He'd slowly begun to understand that not everyone was familiar with high tech like he, Ignis and Prompto were.

Exandria was a new word for him. Teleportation wasn't, though it was more a platform than any magic used by others nowadays in Eos. If he seemed fascinated? It was likely because he was. "Most still use ferries or boats in Eos. Airships were mainly used by the Niflheim army to transport troops or worse." Which was why he was so... wary, before seeing that the airships here were so much different.

"It was hypothetical, anyway." Noctis shrugged. 'Adventurer' was definitely a different title than he was used to, but helping others? Well it wouldn't be the first time he'd been called out on it.
