TEST DRIVE MEME

A. RETRIEVAL

Dreams fade slowly, and awareness returns in increments. The hum of machinery, the smell of recycled air, the murmurs of others waking up around you.

The interior of the ship has been outfitted with cots for those Biggs and Wedge retrieve from the Dream Width. Outside of the makeshift infirmary, windows set into the walls of the worn lounge area offer a view of space.

It’s time to meet your fellow new arrivals who have been brought together on Biggs and Wedge’s airship. None of you know how you came to be here or where you are going, and the door to the cockpit is locked as the pilots focus on navigating the treacherous obstacles of the Dream Width. You might as well take this moment to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers.

B. CURTI CENTER

There’s an almost overwhelming aura of excitement in the tower as researchers rush to document this unprecedented number of interdimensional travelers. Over the commotion, the leaders of the Center struggle to explain, ‘Welcome to Vaikuntha. We don’t know why you’ve been brought here, but this is your new home.’

The staff will do their best to help the off-worlders settle in. They answer the questions they can, provide maps and pamphlets about the world and the destinations within it, and even guide the arrivals to a neighborhood where housing has been provided for you. Yes, due to the strange influx of arrivals, you’ll be expected to share, but the Curti staff are doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Experiences like these bring people together. Perhaps you are the only one here from your world, but at least you are not alone in this experience. Others are right beside you, learning the same information, planning trips to visit the same new cities, checking out these Job things, and settling in to their new (temporary) homes.

C. UP IN THE SKY

There’s a whole new world to explore. It’s almost enough to distract from the fact that there’s one place you can’t go- home.

You are on an Airship, the main mode of transportation between the major cities of Vaikuntha. While the majority are owned by airlines, perhaps you hitched a ride with a friend that has their own. You can go anywhere in a matter of hours — One can only hope you don’t have motion sickness.

D. GUILDS

Proud representatives of the Guild are lined up, ready to demonstrate their skills for the new initiates. Make sure to stay behind the designated line, this might get dangerous.

So you want a new Job? You'll have to first travel to the Guilds, sign the papers, go through the orientation and introductory lectures, and get basic training. Afterwards, you can freely chat and practice with your fellow members, celebrating your new powers, and checking out your new wardrobe.

E. LET'S BE ADVENTURERS

Separated from all of your material possessions, connections, and everything you know, and really, what you’re left with is time. Better try to make the most of it.

Enough expository banter. It's explorin' time. Maybe instead of spending every day in your room, you'd rather spend it living it up in the city of Lavode, or betting on Chocobo Races in Sparks Goldsaucia. Or maybe you'd rather go and explore the caves and ruins near Arito. With Airships and Chocobos at your disposal, you can go nearly anywhere!

F. SIDEQUESTS

Maybe you’re telling yourself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ But wait, you did. At least it pays.

It all started when you checked the Quest Board.  All you wanted was a few gil to spend, and here you are in the wild, hunting for a Malboro Vine. Or maybe you are in some ancient and decrepit ruins looking for an artifact. Or you could be asked to be janitor for a week. Consider yourself lucky though, at least you don't have to do that alone.

G. GET A JOB (THE OTHER KIND)

You’ve got a Job, but Claire keeps sighing and muttering about layabout space-people not earning their keep, so it might be time to seek out Employment as well.

There are plenty of opportunities to earn some gil in Vaikuntha, no matter where you choose to settle down. Your iMog slate includes listing for employment opportunities. Hopefully you can find something you can live with so that you can start saving up for an airship or the security payment for your permanent housing.

H. MOGNET

*Ding!* You’ve got Mog-Mail!

Thankfully, you can instantaneously chat with your friends around the world thanks to you iMog Slate. And unlike old-fashioned Moogle Letters, you can even send messages to everyone in a blink of an eye! However, despite the change in technology, the old tradition of Mognet Strikes have never gone away. Nobody knows any more whether the Moogles have legitimate reasons to go on strike or if they are just lazy. But today, Mognet is down, and to get information you have no choice but going to the public boards or risk message corruption and mishandling.

I. RANDOM ENCOUNTER

The ground trembles, and out of nowhere, something hostile appears! Is that battle music playing?

You were minding your own business walking around, and suddenly monsters attacked you! Time to put to use the skills you've learned with your Jobs! Will you try to fight on your own or seek help? And remember, you die in random battle, you die FOR REAL. There’s no shame from running from enemies that are a higher level than you!

J. WILD CARD

Feeling inspired to create your own prompt? The power is yours!

I see... [Seems... hm.]

It's only to be expected. Just as easily as we have been rescued, we've been kidnapped from our homes.

Kanji-kun...!

[For all the people here, she's surprised that he's actually the one here and capable of coming to her aid. That's even more than fortunate.]

You could say that. I wasn't anticipating this encounter actually... Luckily, I managed to keep them from ambushing me.

[If she had turned a moment later... no, they'll discuss after they fight. She checks her gun; it's ready and loaded, but it looks like one gargoyle wants a piece of Kanji first for interrupting.]
chefbayardee: (jokes!)

[ After a moment, a larger boy walked out from beneath the oceanfront trees, carrying what looked like a lot of Zadom Leathers tied to a strap slung over his shoulder. In the other hand was a... skewer. It was stacked with pieces of meat, dusted with earthy spices.

The food and an easygoing smile clashed heavily with the large knife at his side and the apron that was more than a little splattered with blood. ]

Any chance I can interest you in a Zadom cutlet?
pishirogane: (Don't give me that excuse)

[personal profile] pishirogane 2018-03-21 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
... What?

[It took her a second to process what she was being asked... and then processing the vital information. From his appearance to the item being offered in question, to those materials slung over his shoulder. Immediately, her eyes narrow.]

So that's the reason I haven't located any Zadom... [It might smell tempting, but Naoto can remain pretty focused on her goal. She was not amused to find her quarry quartered already.]

Shinji Ikari | Neon Genesis Evangelion (manga) | Mask or Menace CRAU

[personal profile] lastnerv 2018-03-21 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
B. Curti Center

[This wasn't Shinji's first time in an alternate universe. Or his second. Maybe it was his third? He couldn't keep track of the inter-universe travel any more, which was probably the clearest sign it had happened way too often. Still, getting ripped out of one world and placed into another was disorienting and, more than that, it was upsetting. Sure, he had made a promise that he'd keep living and moving forward, but having to start from scratch was beginning to piss him off.

He realized what had happened shortly after waking up on the strange airship and had completely withdrawn during the trip. Even now, he doesn't seem to be listening to the center staff trying to explain everything to him, instead staring down at his hand, like he's suddenly expecting something to change.

He felt mostly the same as when he left- not that he knows how long ago that might have been, with time/space travel - but he's completely human again. Not that it makes him feel better.]

No. I get it. [When he does speak it's curt and abrupt, angry not at the people trying to help but at this whole situation.] I'm stuck in another world and can't get back to my old one. I get it. Thanks. [He yanks the pamphlet away and turns to storm out...running directly into someone else on the way. Hope your character enjoys colliding with a short shitty teenager.]

D. Guilds

[Even if Shinji had little interest in adventuring and about as little in superpowers as the last time he had them, this whole cowlick situation was untenable. He looked like an idiot and he could just imagine Asuka's voice laughing at him every time he reached up and touched it.

That said, "get a Job" was as far as he had made it in the decision making process and the actual choice was difficult. Gunslinger and Magitek Knight seemed as close to the combat he actually knew from piloting the Evangelion as he could get, but something about Gourmet was appealing. He already liked cooking for people more than he liked shooting things, so it was a natural fit, right?

He felt that way all through reading the Gourmet guild's brochure until he reached a certain skill.]

Excuse me. [He turns to the nearest person.] This "Devour" move. Is that...what I think it is? [Please don't be what he thinks it is.]

F. Let's Be Adventurers

[Shinji stirs the cooking pot sitting over the campfire, his comically large weaponized fork leaning against the log he's sitting on. He'd never been camping with others before, and definitely not in a dense forest like this, but he had to admit that it was actually pretty fun. He didn't know the other members of his party particularly well, having been asked to join at the last second, but they seemed nice enough. Hopefully the stew will be enough for him to earn his keep, and hopefully they don't ask which of the monsters they defeated earlier ended up providing the meat for it.]

Hey guys, it's ready!

G. Get A Job (The Other Kind)

[Working at the library was about as relaxing as a job could be. Shinji had worked in retail enough in his last world to know he never ever wanted to do it again, and getting paid to silently organize books and put them on shelves was infinitely better. Sure, he had to learn an entirely new book organization system, but at least he was able to pick out anything that might look interesting to read for himself later. He's so busy reading the back of a particularly interesting looking novel that it takes him a few seconds to realize someone's trying to get his attention.]

Mm? Oh, sorry, I was- [Don't say you were spacing out idiot they'll think you're bad at this job] I mean. Hi. Uh, Can I help you?

chefbayardee: (confused)

One!

[personal profile] chefbayardee 2018-03-21 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ The faintest bit of recollection tugs at Hunk's memories, and he finds himself drawn to the performer. As the show ends and the crowd starts to disperse, he starts to think that yeah, he has heard that song before.

So he walks up and tosses a few coins into the case as well, seeing that there's not much of a haul yet. ]

Sorry man, I guess they just don't have a taste for the oldies? I'm surprised I recognized it!
chefbayardee: (happy)

A!

[personal profile] chefbayardee 2018-03-21 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Probably. How else would they make repairs up there?

[ Frankly he's just excited to see someone else interested in the technology of this place. Spaceships are one thing, but a magic-powered aircraft is really cool. ]

Y'know, looking at it... I think we could find a way up.

[ He grins as if planning, but then pauses, face flashing to a look of anxiety. ]

Unless it's not safe up there! Or we're not allowed. What if we just ask someone who works here?

[Saori had forgotten at the moment that she wasn't alone. She blinked the tears away before turning to Robin.]

Yeah, it looks like a good place to call port and get away from the hustle and bustle of cities. After all, a sky pirate has to touch the ground eventually. Mary would've been thrilled to get another airship.

I was also thinking about my family back home too. Even with my work back home, a place like this would be perfect for the twins to grow up.

[Yue's always been a hungry kid. Candy, curry, octopus, humans, sandwiches, chocolate--it's all good. He's not picky! Which is why when he sees a guy doing cool knife tricks with food, he can't help stalking over, watching curiously from somewhere behind Hunk. Maybe too close? He's still bad at judging personal space.

...Honestly he'd have clapped at the display, but he doesn't really have the hands for that, which is why he stays silent until Hunk's outburst.]

Maybe you're supposed to chop them up with it?
chefbayardee: (wHAT)

[personal profile] chefbayardee 2018-03-21 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's... that's my bad. Sorry.

[ He laughs, first sheepishly and then genuinely. ]

I got a little carried away once I realized I could take out a few Zadom, go to the edge of the woods, skin the bodies, handle the meat, relax for a bit, and then come back to, well, more of them.

[ Hunk's eyes register something behind her, and with a gentle gesture of the hand motions for her to turn around. Behind her, another pale lizard was poking its head through the surface of the water. His voice fell to a whisper as he took another bite from a cutlet. ]

Just like that.
chefbayardee: (sad)

[personal profile] chefbayardee 2018-03-21 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't had a good calzone so long. It deserved a warrior's sendoff...

[ He let out an urp before looking a bit green in the face, though a deep breath seemed to calm his stomach, at least for now. ]

...Even though it fought harder on the return trip.

[ He's still visibly saddened, and lets out a dejected little sigh before glancing back at the trash can, realizing ew, no and averting his gaze... right to this woman. And now he's staring right at her. ]
pishirogane: (And I should care because?)

[personal profile] pishirogane 2018-03-21 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Just because it was easy, she wants to say still fixing him with a glare. How long has he been here that she can't find any? Did he seriously cook all of them? What was the point? Who else was there to share with? All these thoughts swirl in her mind, but she looks back at his gesture.]

[... Hm.]

... How fortunate there seems to be an overpopulation. I did not want to report a quest failed because none could be located...
chefbayardee: (disgust)

[personal profile] chefbayardee 2018-03-21 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ Hunk is engrossed in his books, his knifework, and his complaining, so he hasn't quite turned around enough to notice just who is standing behind him. ]

I mean I guess so, but without good armor it seems risky. Slicing a vegetable is way different than...

[ He hiccups, swiping a piece of bread from the loaf to upset his stomach as his thoughts progress. ]

Y'know, carving up a real, living being! That's trying to kill you!

[ His body shudders at the notion- he's not axe crazy! He doesn't know how his friends deal with close-quarters combat. And he still hasn't turned around. ]
twomeals: ([oh] 13)

[personal profile] twomeals 2018-03-21 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
[The Mysterious Figureā„¢ behind Hunk hums thoughtfully. So the problem is that it's dangerous? Maybe the guy's scared? That makes sense, Yue's never been the fighting type either. But let's see, solutions, solutions....]

Could you carve it up while wearing armor? Or, umm...oh, you could throw your knife at it! A knife would probably hurt more than what I got, at least.

[Having picked black mage as his profession, he's currently got a black plush fox gripped in his scaly winged talons. A very menacing weapon, for sure.]
chefbayardee: (Default)

[personal profile] chefbayardee 2018-03-21 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that would be pret-ty bad.

[ He laughed again, unwilling to verbalize how uncomfortable he was with the numbers on these things. Was everything in Vaikuntha this abundant? He takes another bite of cutlet, this time not even waiting to finish chewing before he kept talking. ]

Sho, uh, chu even know ow t'skin em? [ Translation: "So, uh, you even know how to skin them?" ]
studdedcouncilprez: (Fire drill)

[personal profile] studdedcouncilprez 2018-03-21 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
[H-Hey! That guy almost ran her over and... Oh... he's sick, huh? Well, that's okay. Oh, ew, that was... pretty meaty. That was some pretty motion sickness this poor guy has...]

[She couldn't help herself, before she knew it her hand was reaching over for the guy's shoulder and he gave him a soft pat.]

...um, are you alright, mister?

[Spending so much time sitting on the bench (deciding what asterisk she wanted, sob) did have one perk: Makoto has had a lot of time to listen to what other people have been talking about. Apparently a lot of people were being assigned that task, and she had heard that the best place to get it was the cactus-monsters nearby.]

[Lowering her book, she turns to help this person with at least directions when suddenly.]

K-Kawakami-sensei?? What are you doing here??
chefbayardee: (oh yeah sure no problem)

[personal profile] chefbayardee 2018-03-21 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Armor is probably a no-go, because these asterisk things don't want to actually keep us safe.

[ His memory flashes back to his readings about the classes, about how clashing with recommended armor and weapon types just caused problems. Not the sort of thing he wanted to test in a real encounter. ]

I mean throwing the knife could work, but then I'm defenseless... Unless I get one of those giant forks. That might help!

[ He laughs like someone who just started winning at Mario Kart but the tone is a lot more sarcastic as he drives the blade of his knife into the practice loaf. Finally, he starts to turn around. ]

Besides, if they think a fork will be helpful, I'm sure whatever you have will be-

[Saori attentively listens while her mind starts chiselling away at the challenge before her. Candy horns are doable and perhaps a lightly sweetened whipped cream or cream cheese frosting will do the trick.]

Food not only gives us nourishment but leaves us with memories we cherish. I hope I can honor your family with my recreation of it.

[The biggest challenge would be replicate this monster extract. A cake that wouldn't be too saccharine but a flavor that leaves quite the impression. Her eyes scan the kitchen shelves and open pantry. She goes over to the pantry and pulls out a tin. Cocoa powder sounded like a good start. Something else clicked in her mind and she grabbed a few more bottles before placing them on the counter with the rest of the ingredients.

First, she got the oven heating up and a rectangular baking pan ready. Next, she measured out the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, a red powder, and dark cocoa powder and sifted them into a bowl. With the dry ingredients well mixed, her attention turned to the butter and sugar. Once they were beaten to a fluffy pale mass, she added the eggs and vanilla extract. Gradually, she added the dry to the wet until they were well mixed. The now dark batter was poured into the pan before being placed in the oven.
]

The cake will take some time to bake and cool but that'll give us time to get that frosting and those horns you mentioned ready. But I'll let you taste the cake before we decorate if that's alright with you.

[ Claws. Talons. Creepy eyes. Feathers the color of blood. And are those feathers around his waist or is it a weird skirt?

And why is there a little doll in his hand? Hunk's voice raises incredibly high, to a nigh-whimper as he tenses up, freezes even, a far cry from the confident knife work from moments ago. ]

Fine? Wh-why don't you just...

[ He's been part of diplomatic attaches, and helped inspire countless races across the universe, so he shouldn't be scared right now. But maybe it's because the guy is uncomfortably close and- ]

... May you repeat that? Without the food in your mouth.

Hmm...

[ She's having to try very hard to not to get distracted by the idea that hey, she may not have taken those books but now she kind of wishes she had because those sound useful. Or interesting. Or both. ]

Do we know how many people have been in and out today?

B. Curti Center

[Makoto's hands clench as he hears the explanation that is being provided. A part of the tension was fear. Another part was anger at their present situation. She wasn't completely trusting of these people. True, there was no reason for them to lie, but then she wasn't sure what to make of these circumstances. A new world? Her previous one destroyed? Lodgings and accommodations? Honestly, it was too much to take in and she was worried for her sister. She was worried for her team. She was worried for her home and everything they went through.]

[But she could put that aside. For now. She should be thankful that the people were being so accommodating. For now. Still...]

I see. So, everything is gone, and there is absolutely no way that we can go back? [She sighed.] I appreciate everything you are doing, but a part of me also wonders what the people of Vaikuntha get in this exchange. I don't mean to be rude when you've been so helpful, but a little transparency here would go a long way to help ease my worries.

C. Up in the Sky

[Not long after her chat, Makoto quickly decided that there was nothing to do but aimlessly wander. A swift hand followed grounded her to the side of the wall as she contemplated. The wall lead her to the top deck her eyes widen at the sight that she could see.]

[A whole world stretched out in front of her. The trees, valleys, rivers and lakes seemed to dance underneath a steady sky of blue and white clouds. She had flown before, yes, but it was nothing like this. She bravely reached for the railing on the side and took it all in.]

Wow... its beautiful...

[The view was so beautiful that she couldn't even feel the teardrops wetting her cheeks.[

D. Guilds(?)

[While many would be thrilled by the idea of taking on a job and sling around magic or start wearing armor, Makoto was in a rut. There were just so many different options. Many of them seemed so fantastical too, which was only making things doubly confusing. So, instead of entering into the guild halls and receiving an asterisk, the honor student was sitting on a bench pouring over a guide pamphlet that describes each of them.]

A Tactician sounds like it would be one possibility, but its power seems pretty weak. I also considered a Paladin, but... can I really go around wearing heavy armor?

[She leans into the pamphlet, her eyebrows furrowing as she continues.] I have done some Akido, but would that really make me a Monk? Or maybe I should be a Gunslinger because I've shot a revolver?

[She folded the book into her lap with a huff, giving up for now.] I'm getting nowhere fast like this...

H. Mognet

[After everything that she had saw and did today, there was one thing that was bothering her. Yes she found her lodgings, and a part of her was getting some idea of the job that she would want, but there was something more important. If only there was a way to reach them.... oh!]

[Remembering where the mognet board was (and ignoring the fuzzy little creatures that were gripping of a moogle's right to a 4-hour work day) Makoto pinned up one message with a poorly drawn logo]

[A smile spreads on her face. They're out there. She knows it. And everything will start again with that message: a standard of hope in the darkest of circumstances.]

J. Wild Card

[Though she's more of The Priestess. Anyways, hit me!]

Huh. Alright, let's try this again then.

[Kenichi takes a bushel of the greens Noctis offered. He extends it out towards the chocobos and waits.]

Right. The chocobo chooses their master, or so the guild says.

[Some of the birds turn their heads towards the offered food and stir. Eventually, one of them breaks from the flock but slowly to eye their potential master. The chocobo lets out a satisfied noise before it gently headbutts Kenichi on the forehead. Given that he wasn't punted yet, he reaches up to give it a pat on the head with a smile. ]

Hey, thanks for the advice. I probably would've been stuck here all day if it weren't for you. I'm Kenichi. What's your name?
