TEST DRIVE MEME

A. RETRIEVAL

Dreams fade slowly, and awareness returns in increments. The hum of machinery, the smell of recycled air, the murmurs of others waking up around you.

The interior of the ship has been outfitted with cots for those Biggs and Wedge retrieve from the Dream Width. Outside of the makeshift infirmary, windows set into the walls of the worn lounge area offer a view of space.

It’s time to meet your fellow new arrivals who have been brought together on Biggs and Wedge’s airship. None of you know how you came to be here or where you are going, and the door to the cockpit is locked as the pilots focus on navigating the treacherous obstacles of the Dream Width. You might as well take this moment to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers.

B. CURTI CENTER

There’s an almost overwhelming aura of excitement in the tower as researchers rush to document this unprecedented number of interdimensional travelers. Over the commotion, the leaders of the Center struggle to explain, ‘Welcome to Vaikuntha. We don’t know why you’ve been brought here, but this is your new home.’

The staff will do their best to help the off-worlders settle in. They answer the questions they can, provide maps and pamphlets about the world and the destinations within it, and even guide the arrivals to a neighborhood where housing has been provided for you. Yes, due to the strange influx of arrivals, you’ll be expected to share, but the Curti staff are doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Experiences like these bring people together. Perhaps you are the only one here from your world, but at least you are not alone in this experience. Others are right beside you, learning the same information, planning trips to visit the same new cities, checking out these Job things, and settling in to their new (temporary) homes.

C. UP IN THE SKY

There’s a whole new world to explore. It’s almost enough to distract from the fact that there’s one place you can’t go- home.

You are on an Airship, the main mode of transportation between the major cities of Vaikuntha. While the majority are owned by airlines, perhaps you hitched a ride with a friend that has their own. You can go anywhere in a matter of hours — One can only hope you don’t have motion sickness.

D. GUILDS

Proud representatives of the Guild are lined up, ready to demonstrate their skills for the new initiates. Make sure to stay behind the designated line, this might get dangerous.

So you want a new Job? You'll have to first travel to the Guilds, sign the papers, go through the orientation and introductory lectures, and get basic training. Afterwards, you can freely chat and practice with your fellow members, celebrating your new powers, and checking out your new wardrobe.

E. LET'S BE ADVENTURERS

Separated from all of your material possessions, connections, and everything you know, and really, what you’re left with is time. Better try to make the most of it.

Enough expository banter. It's explorin' time. Maybe instead of spending every day in your room, you'd rather spend it living it up in the city of Lavode, or betting on Chocobo Races in Sparks Goldsaucia. Or maybe you'd rather go and explore the caves and ruins near Arito. With Airships and Chocobos at your disposal, you can go nearly anywhere!

F. SIDEQUESTS

Maybe you’re telling yourself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ But wait, you did. At least it pays.

It all started when you checked the Quest Board.  All you wanted was a few gil to spend, and here you are in the wild, hunting for a Malboro Vine. Or maybe you are in some ancient and decrepit ruins looking for an artifact. Or you could be asked to be janitor for a week. Consider yourself lucky though, at least you don't have to do that alone.

G. GET A JOB (THE OTHER KIND)

You’ve got a Job, but Claire keeps sighing and muttering about layabout space-people not earning their keep, so it might be time to seek out Employment as well.

There are plenty of opportunities to earn some gil in Vaikuntha, no matter where you choose to settle down. Your iMog slate includes listing for employment opportunities. Hopefully you can find something you can live with so that you can start saving up for an airship or the security payment for your permanent housing.

H. MOGNET

*Ding!* You’ve got Mog-Mail!

Thankfully, you can instantaneously chat with your friends around the world thanks to you iMog Slate. And unlike old-fashioned Moogle Letters, you can even send messages to everyone in a blink of an eye! However, despite the change in technology, the old tradition of Mognet Strikes have never gone away. Nobody knows any more whether the Moogles have legitimate reasons to go on strike or if they are just lazy. But today, Mognet is down, and to get information you have no choice but going to the public boards or risk message corruption and mishandling.

I. RANDOM ENCOUNTER

The ground trembles, and out of nowhere, something hostile appears! Is that battle music playing?

You were minding your own business walking around, and suddenly monsters attacked you! Time to put to use the skills you've learned with your Jobs! Will you try to fight on your own or seek help? And remember, you die in random battle, you die FOR REAL. There’s no shame from running from enemies that are a higher level than you!

Nice to meet you.

[He lefts go after the brief shake, and honestly? What the place looks like doesn't matter. He's just proud he remembered the manners his adoptive family tried to instill in him. Though he'd be lying if he didn't say the suit of armor didn't get his attention for a brief second.]

Yeah, heard pretty much the same. [If anything, this was a bit like déjà vu for him. Something familiar in a place that's anything but.

He enters, but doesn't go beyond noting the layout of the entry and different rooms he can see from it. ..And Shiro, don't trust him with the kitchen. He might not be a lethal chef like an old friend of his, but he doesn't exactly know how to cook himself.]

Other than likely knowing who most of the towns and locations are named after, I likely got nothing. [A half-lie. He has no idea what's going on here, but he's fairly certain that-] Other than a hunch, anyway.

[Ignis usually wouldn't be the one to strike up a conversation with strangers. However, it seemed like a good thing to do while waiting for the ship to land.

But- that piqued Ignis' interest. A town named after his mother? And a lake named after him? This is too peculiar. Is he-]

Are you the native resident of this place?

[Goodbye tact.]
acceptedlife: (amused ♡ so that's how it is...)

[personal profile] acceptedlife 2018-04-02 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Me? Nah. [He shakes his head.] Not really from anywhere.

[Not anywhere that still exists, anyway. And he didn't exactly get to either return to the Tower or to his mother's home after they saved the world they met on. Though this stranger doesn't need to know that. So instead, he focuses on why he thinks that.]

It's just too much of a coincidence. Maybe one or two, but I recognized every name... Nakagawa in particular, considering it's our family name.

Red Mage... I admit it is not something I heard about before. So it is interesting.

[Bloom was looking it over. Some of them were kind of odd for jobs, some she wasn't even sure. Some she was sure her friends would do better than her if they were here.]

I am considering picking up a blade. Might as well have that perfect balence. I mean back home I would fight with her fire magic, but here I want to be able to either fight or maybe be a healer.

Connie is incredibly grateful for Uendo's silence and newfound competence. It almost seemed like he was a different person when he was under pressure. She perks up when Uendo points out the dying grove, smiling for the first time during their arduous journey. "Good catch, Uendo! Now, keep a lookout for any-"

She's interrupted by three flaming sets of hovering red runes flying from seemingly out of nowhere and towards the duo. Mouth set in a grim line, Connie draws her gunblade, setting its bullets to Aqua mode. "What are red elementals even- you know what, never mind. Are you packing any water elemental spells?"

Connie had shared a mind with Steven enough times to recognize a PTSD-induced anxiety attack when she saw one, not to mention her own experiences with a brain that seemed dedicated to plotting out the worst possible outcomes to any given situation in excruciating detail. So hopefully she had enough knowledge to calm somebody down from a meltdown. Hopefully.

Pushing aside her own growing panic at the unfamiliar, insane situation that she'd found herself in, Connie rushes up to Ira. "Hey. Hey," she says in a soothing voice. "Calm down. You're not there anymore. This is real. Don't worry, it's gonna be fine." Not that she actually believed that, but Connie had the feeling that the silver-haired man needed to hear something reassuring.

[Not from 'anywhere'? What does that even mean? Maybe his home was destroyed so he was brought here? Those are questions that Ignis can't possibly ask, especially when he sees the expression on his face. There were plenty of people back at the Crown City that he heard say 'I'm not from anywhere'- the people that moved in after disaster struck their lands. It is a difficult topic to talk about and Ignis will not press it.

Still- to think that the town and lake are dedicated to them despite not being around here is a bit farfetched in Ignis' opinion.]

I don't like being the bringer of a bad mood with my questions,[he says that but he always is with his rational thoughts,] but how do you know that if you are not from here?
acceptedlife: (down ♡ hypnotized as I fantasize)

[personal profile] acceptedlife 2018-04-02 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[It means exactly what Ignis thinks it means. His home was destroyed, probably beyond saving. Despite how much it makes his fledgling heart ache. There's nothing he can do about it, and that's that. Especially when he's stuck here.]

You heard the legend, right? Of a world cursed by an endless cycle of life and death?

[He pauses, lowering his voice so that, over the winds and sound of the airship's engines, only this stranger would hear. He doubted any native would believe it, but...]

While the story here's not entirely accurate, I- was there when the cycle ended. So was the family I found there, in Crystallis.

He notes the name and cross-references it to descriptions. But it sticks in his head that Noctis trusts Ignis wholly and completely. Or at least that's what it sounds like. Noctis is asleep before he can respond in kind, to tell him Keith is who he trusts above all others.

He settles back against the wall and tips his head just enough to listen to the sounds of someone's approach. It seems soon will be much sooner than he guessed. "Alright. Then I'll trust him too."

[It's not nice, but assholes that only care about themselves don't listen any other way. Okuyasu slams his foot onto the wall and leans towards the merchant in the punk manner he'd picked up in adolescence.]

You got some nerve to go around lying and breaking your promises. And you do we're strong enough to take out those monsters, right?
spaceforged: (Past the limits)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2018-04-02 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So, earth and water so far. As well as whatever got in through the broken upper levels. [He traces over the spots reported to have been damaged. How much of the knowledge there is now lost? But that isn't their job.

Their task is to secure the ruins so others can salvage what they can.]

Since we're on clean up duty, temporarily blocking the gaps anything could come in from wouldn't be a bad idea. If we're dealing with the cave system too forming a blockade just before the section they meet would be ideal. We can use whatever is too broken to be repaired.

They can remove it and melt it down later.

Ira's glad that his hands help hide the grimace. Because while he can tell that this kid is trying to help, the fact that this is "real" does not help. He knew far too many things that were, some that no one around their ages ought to know.

"Don't tell me to calm down," he mutters, without really meaning to so sardonic in the process yet it just comes out that way. Trying to tell him to calm down only makes the negative emotions stronger and he hates it. He hates that this is his gut reaction to the sights and sounds. That kneejerk reaction of needing to get out, but he can already tell thanks to his nose: his powers are gone. Again. And this isn't helping because he remembers the first time he lost those borrowed - replicated - powers. And the second time.

'Don't promise something you don't know for sure,' he wants to hiss out, but stops himself. Whoever this is, he can tell is younger than he appears to be. So, he holds his tongue. If only because his anxiety started to spike when he tries to open his mouth again. It doesn't matter that he's not there anymore, doesn't matter if it's real or not. Not when-

You're being a very bad dog.

...It would be so much easier if this were happening in a fight, instead of in an enclosed space. He'd be able to handle it so much better.
conniemaheswaran: (ConnieBracingForEmotions)

[personal profile] conniemaheswaran 2018-04-02 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Connie winces. She should've known better than to just barge into a stranger's trauma-induced anxiety attack and expect to make everything suddenly fantastic for him again. She wasn't Steven, what was she thinking? But still. Something in his eyes were... familiar. Like the utterly broken expression Pearl had worn that one sunset in the Sky Arena. "S-sorry," she stutters, stepping away. "If it helps, I just, just... sorry. I figured that I, um, might be able to help since, since I'm familiar with and this is all new and confusing to me too so I tried to help and... I'm going to stop talking now. I- Sorry."

She should've been better than this. Connie got over these problems months, if not years, ago. Why was she backsliding? Why couldn't she help him? She was trained to keep a cool head in these potentially dangerous situations, why couldn't Connie help, she was supposed to be good at this!
spaceforged: (Feeling lost? Yeah he does that a lot.)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2018-04-02 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
..if you don't mind sharing it I'd like to hear your hunch. [Neither of them can cook. It's going to be a lot of take out in their future. Alarm bells silently flash in the back of his mind. Someone who knows who all the towns and locations are named after.

That's a hell of a lot more than he's heard from anyone.]

But only if you're feeling up to it. Today has been a lot.
regalblaze: (Worried 🔪 standing on a broken field)

[personal profile] regalblaze 2018-04-02 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[The frown that etched into Ignis' features should tell him that he has no clue about the legend. Any legend. The only thing he's ever heard about in his life was the prophecy of One True King, ascending and saving the Star from night eternal.

...the destiny of his King. A destiny that, in Ignis' opinion, was so unfair that Astrals are weeping. Or, at least, the Astrals that do have a sense of compassion.

He listens carefully and quietly, not wanting to lose the bits of the story over the sound of ship's engine.]

The cycle... ended... [Would that mean that everyone and everything died?] Do you mind if I ask what is Crystallis?
acceptedlife: (hm ♡ there's a memory...)

[personal profile] acceptedlife 2018-04-02 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ah, so he didn't. Well, it doesn't really matter, and he doesn't really mind. So, he shrugs, before motioning that he could just take a step closer. So it's easier to hear.]

Crystallis... was a lot like Vaikuntha. [He starts, resting both hands on the railing.] A nexus world that drew others in, only we awoke planet-side instead of some ship. Unless you got really unlucky at the end, anyway. Most of us inside Aqures Ixen, the city that took the displaced in, by a large object known as the Crystal of Fire before things escalated.
spaceforged: (...well that's new.)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2018-04-02 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I would imagine it's pretty important for bards to have access to musical instruments. You have the mog slate, that should tell you what skills you'll learn as a bard. [He pulls out his slate while carefully stepping out onto the street.

Shiro taps the job icon.]
But if they told you about the bard job...you probably don't have it yet. It was just a recommendation or a misunderstanding. We all choose our jobs from own free will.

[They're freelancers right now. He noticed a subtle change in his hair that bothered him since he saw it. It's the subtlest cowlick since his hair is short. But. Still there.]
acceptedlife: (hmph ♡ of how we used to be)

[personal profile] acceptedlife 2018-04-02 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[There definitely will be a lot of takeout. Unless one of them decides to take up cooking lessons. Honestly he probably should have back in the Tower, but why bother when it was all literally oatmeal, anyway? Or something worse. We don't talk about that. He had another opportunity to ask his adoptive mother after he ended up in that huge house alone, too, but... whoops.]

Honestly, aside from waking up on that ship? It's been practically another Tuesday for me.

[Except who really knows what day of the week it was? Not this replica. Doesn't really even care right now, save the fact he's once again pulled from everything he knew before.]

It'd take a lot of explaining, but if my hunch is right... this is the world a four of my former comrades helped to create.

[He can't call them his friends. He only ever really spoke to two of them, and one had been only the once outside of battles they wound up in together. Yet from his tone... he respected them a great deal. And, a little more quietly as he leans against the wall:]

Even the known nations have similar names to them...
spaceforged: (insert witty keywords)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2018-04-02 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Shiro says nothing and leans back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. The idea sounds crazy but this is the only lead he has so far. He'd be an idiot if he didn't at least find out more.]

...you said it would take a lot of explaining. Do you mind going into further detail?

[He adds, his voice a little softer.] If it will take a while you might want to sit down first.

Ira holds up a hand, only one gloved finger extended, as he rubs his eyes with the other. Trying to focus on his breathing rather than the thoughts going through his head. Just enough to use his words. Just... give him a minute, Connie. He's trying to recenter himself.

"I know; you're trying to help," he says quietly, his raised hand lowering before he lightly - almost fearing he could break it if he grips it too hard - brushes his fingers against the cool surface of a pendant that hangs from his neck. In, out. In, and out.

"R-right. It's... I..." Connie shakes her head. He needed space. Why couldn't she see before that he needed space? Stupid, stupid, stupid. "I can leave, if you want."
acceptedlife: (hm ♡ there's a memory...)

[personal profile] acceptedlife 2018-04-02 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[He shakes his head.] Been sitting half the day. I'll be fine.

[He's more used to being on his feet than he is on his butt. If he doesn't move around much he feels like he's gonna be unable to rest tonight at all.]

I- we were all brought to another world before this. Summoned, really. Me, and the comrades and friends we made along the way. To fend off the end of the world as it began to fall into ruin. [Ira crosses his arms, glancing at the door briefly before falling back into reflecting.] Which, we did. By dismantling the entire summoning process and the guardian of the cycle of life and death it was in, but hey. What else do you do in the face of eldritch horrors, anyway?

[It's a sad attempt at lightening the mood, but he knows it likely doesn't make sense without context, so he'll bite.]

Crystallis was a world that subsided on the lives of countless others. Kept rejuvenating itself on the life force of what it could steal then destroyed the rest, creating a force that tried to destroy it in order to become whole again with the parts that had been taken from it. Including the "Heroes of Light" that had been taken from them.

Now before you panic, I highly doubt that same thing's happening here. Like I said earlier, we destroyed the tech designed to keep the summoning and death cycle going. Didn't exactly win us any favors with the natives at first, but... we succeeded where no previous generation did before.

[They won. They didn't sacrifice everyone in order to restart the cycle.]

I know it probably sounds crazy, but... [He rubs the back of his neck.]
spaceforged: (Team stare go)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2018-04-02 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ira's voice sounds slightly far away. His hands have clenched on his forearms as the information processes and is compared to things he knows. It sounds hauntingly familiar. It sounds a bit too much like the Galra Empire and their mining quintessence from planets. His mind flashes back to the last battle where it felt like life was being ripped out of him.

He holds up his metal hand.]
No. I've heard of processes like this. [His voice comes out steady and calm. His worried and troubles are shoved into the back of his head. He can think about how similar they are later.]

So the question is, why are you back? Why were we brought here? That's what we need to focus on. If all this lines up the keys to those questions probably lie out there within the world. Maybe even buried in their legends.

Would you be willing to work with me on this? I'd understand if you'd rather rest or focus on something else.

[Is it smart to approach the scary purple lady who looks just about ready to commit murder? Possibly not.

Patches isn't too concerned with being smart, though, much to the chagrin of those he shares a body with. The important thing here is that someone's looking mighty grumpy, and that's just no good at all.]

[Uendo hasn't quite sorted out how he should feel about the prospect of roommates. A part of him feels relief; the few weeks between Shisho's death and waking up in Vaikuntha, living by himself for the first time, were terribly lonely. Even Patches and Kisegawa couldn't fill up the silence of an empty house.

On the other hand, having people around all the time is going to make it so much harder to hide his bad moments... and that's not even going into how on earth he's going to keep his disorder a secret. If, indeed, he even needs to keep it a secret here. He's not sure where he stands on that, either.

For the time being, a bright smile and a handshake is all his new roommate is getting. If Uendo is good at something, it's putting on a performance.]

Uendo Toneido. It's a pleasure to meet you, Ira.
