TEST DRIVE MEME

A. RETRIEVAL

Dreams fade slowly, and awareness returns in increments. The hum of machinery, the smell of recycled air, the murmurs of others waking up around you.

The interior of the ship has been outfitted with cots for those Biggs and Wedge retrieve from the Dream Width. Outside of the makeshift infirmary, windows set into the walls of the worn lounge area offer a view of space.

It’s time to meet your fellow new arrivals who have been brought together on Biggs and Wedge’s airship. None of you know how you came to be here or where you are going, and the door to the cockpit is locked as the pilots focus on navigating the treacherous obstacles of the Dream Width. You might as well take this moment to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers.

B. CURTI CENTER

There’s an almost overwhelming aura of excitement in the tower as researchers rush to document this unprecedented number of interdimensional travelers. Over the commotion, the leaders of the Center struggle to explain, ‘Welcome to Vaikuntha. We don’t know why you’ve been brought here, but this is your new home.’

The staff will do their best to help the off-worlders settle in. They answer the questions they can, provide maps and pamphlets about the world and the destinations within it, and even guide the arrivals to a neighborhood where housing has been provided for you. Yes, due to the strange influx of arrivals, you’ll be expected to share, but the Curti staff are doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Experiences like these bring people together. Perhaps you are the only one here from your world, but at least you are not alone in this experience. Others are right beside you, learning the same information, planning trips to visit the same new cities, checking out these Job things, and settling in to their new (temporary) homes.

C. UP IN THE SKY

There’s a whole new world to explore. It’s almost enough to distract from the fact that there’s one place you can’t go- home.

You are on an Airship, the main mode of transportation between the major cities of Vaikuntha. While the majority are owned by airlines, perhaps you hitched a ride with a friend that has their own. You can go anywhere in a matter of hours — One can only hope you don’t have motion sickness.

D. GUILDS

Proud representatives of the Guild are lined up, ready to demonstrate their skills for the new initiates. Make sure to stay behind the designated line, this might get dangerous.

So you want a new Job? You'll have to first travel to the Guilds, sign the papers, go through the orientation and introductory lectures, and get basic training. Afterwards, you can freely chat and practice with your fellow members, celebrating your new powers, and checking out your new wardrobe.

E. LET'S BE ADVENTURERS

Separated from all of your material possessions, connections, and everything you know, and really, what you’re left with is time. Better try to make the most of it.

Enough expository banter. It's explorin' time. Maybe instead of spending every day in your room, you'd rather spend it living it up in the city of Lavode, or betting on Chocobo Races in Sparks Goldsaucia. Or maybe you'd rather go and explore the caves and ruins near Arito. With Airships and Chocobos at your disposal, you can go nearly anywhere!

F. SIDEQUESTS

Maybe you’re telling yourself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ But wait, you did. At least it pays.

It all started when you checked the Quest Board.  All you wanted was a few gil to spend, and here you are in the wild, hunting for a Malboro Vine. Or maybe you are in some ancient and decrepit ruins looking for an artifact. Or you could be asked to be janitor for a week. Consider yourself lucky though, at least you don't have to do that alone.

G. GET A JOB (THE OTHER KIND)

You’ve got a Job, but Claire keeps sighing and muttering about layabout space-people not earning their keep, so it might be time to seek out Employment as well.

There are plenty of opportunities to earn some gil in Vaikuntha, no matter where you choose to settle down. Your iMog slate includes listing for employment opportunities. Hopefully you can find something you can live with so that you can start saving up for an airship or the security payment for your permanent housing.

H. MOGNET

*Ding!* You’ve got Mog-Mail!

Thankfully, you can instantaneously chat with your friends around the world thanks to you iMog Slate. And unlike old-fashioned Moogle Letters, you can even send messages to everyone in a blink of an eye! However, despite the change in technology, the old tradition of Mognet Strikes have never gone away. Nobody knows any more whether the Moogles have legitimate reasons to go on strike or if they are just lazy. But today, Mognet is down, and to get information you have no choice but going to the public boards or risk message corruption and mishandling.

I. RANDOM ENCOUNTER

The ground trembles, and out of nowhere, something hostile appears! Is that battle music playing?

You were minding your own business walking around, and suddenly monsters attacked you! Time to put to use the skills you've learned with your Jobs! Will you try to fight on your own or seek help? And remember, you die in random battle, you die FOR REAL. There’s no shame from running from enemies that are a higher level than you!

Connie is incredibly grateful for Uendo's silence and newfound competence. It almost seemed like he was a different person when he was under pressure. She perks up when Uendo points out the dying grove, smiling for the first time during their arduous journey. "Good catch, Uendo! Now, keep a lookout for any-"

She's interrupted by three flaming sets of hovering red runes flying from seemingly out of nowhere and towards the duo. Mouth set in a grim line, Connie draws her gunblade, setting its bullets to Aqua mode. "What are red elementals even- you know what, never mind. Are you packing any water elemental spells?"

Kisegawa's eyes narrow. Fire monsters in a forest? That can't lead to good things.

"Oh, I have something better." Granted, she hasn't had the chance to test it out yet, but now's as good time as any. Bringing out her staff, Kisegawa wastes no time call upon an Eidolon. "Crush 'em, Shiva!"

Though not nearly as powerful as a full summon, the partial form of the ice goddess does its job, unleashing a combo of ice strikes on the middle Red Elemental. That should soften it up nicely for a follow up attack.

Connie nods in approval, using the time granted to her by the ice goddess' devastating strike to line up her gauntlet with the weakened elemental. Target locked, a beam of, for lack of a better term, "cold energy"--Connie had gone on an ultimately pointless rant about how coldness is the lack of energy, not an abundance of it, when she first got the asterisk--shoots out from her palm and into the monster.

The Blizzara Laser is enough to take the elemental out, but the other two both launch Firas at the two adventurers as an opening salvo. Connie winces as the spell catches her in the chest, as a Magitek Knight ironically isn't equipped to deal with magic on the defensive.

"Tch--!" Being a Summoner makes the magical attacks more of an annoyance than anything, at least for now. What makes Kisegawa bristle, though, is seeing the kid get burned. Just whose idea was it to send children on life-threatening missions anyway? Someone's going to get smacked around once they make it back to town.

Not that she has any choice but to rely on Connie's protection, whether she likes it or not. With Partial Summoning on cooldown, the best Kisegawa can do is fire off a Ruin spell to give them some breathing room.

"I'll need a minute to bring her out again. Can you buy me some time?"

((OOC note: Technically, Red Elementals are weak to Aqua spells and are strong against Blizzard ones, at least according to traditional FF logic, but for the sake of us not dying here let's go ahead and ignore that for now.))

Connie nods, cocking her gunblade. "I can do you one better than that." Moving in front of Uendo and praying her new hardware works, Connie quickly taps a few near-invisible buttons on the hilt of her weapon. Arcane circles begin spinning around the blade, and complex Magitek components pop out of extradimensional spaces to attach themselves to her weapon. In the blink of an eye, Connie's gunblade has become an underslung cannon.

Connie smacks her greaves with a gauntleted fist, and pylons erupt from the bottom of Connie's boots to anchor her to the ground. This was a big attack, she needed to have some safeguards in place. The cannon, now fully charged and glowing with blue light, is ready to fire. For maximum Anime Points, Connie yells, "Blizzard Beam!" before a stream of ice shards and pure cold wrapped in blue energy erupts from the cannon, enveloping the elementals in the spell.

Grinning widely, Connie says, "I can do this all day if you need me to. Hopefully. If this doesn't explode first." This time ready for the elementals' attack, Connie braces herself for it, keeping her pylons anchored to stay on her feet.
whirluendo_of_puns: ([Kisegawa] i'm gonna enjoy this)

[OOC: Oh! In all the FFs I've played, fire enemies are almost always weak to ice, so I just assumed that went for Red Elementals too. I thought water is the opposite to thunder. OH WELL.]

...All right, Kisegawa is actually rather impressed. Connie's not lacking for spirit, that's for sure.

"Heh... Not bad. But I'd say your gadgets are wasted on these glorified matchsticks, so let's finish this quickly, shall we?" She readies her staff with a flourish, not to be outdone in the dramatics department. She is a performer, after all. "Once more, Shiva! Heavenly Strike!"

The air turns frigid as Shiva makes her second appearance, freezing and destroying the second Red Elemental before it can attack. The last remaining Elemental, weakened by both Ruin and the Blizzard Beam, struggles to stay afloat, though it still has enough life left to blast Connie with another Fira.

Connie winces as the spell hits her, grateful that her armor protects from most of the heat. Rather than waste more mana on the elemental, Connie just raises her gunblade and fires three Blizzard Bullets, finally taking it down. Whistling, Connie turns to Kisegawa and says, “Nice job! Now, c’mon, let’s finish this job up and find that Pod.” She carefully strides into the blighted area of the forest, the corruption growing more obvious the deeper she goes.
whirluendo_of_puns: ([Kisegawa] what do you think)

[personal profile] whirluendo_of_puns 2018-04-07 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hold up."

Kisegawa strides over to Connie, giving the girl a critical look. Then she reaches into her robes and hands over a Potion.

"Here. I'm not having you walk around with burns, fantasy land logic or no." How exactly magical injuries work, Kisegawa isn't entirely sure. But that's besides the point.

Connie starts. She wasn't expecting Uendo to be so attentive and... kind, after his initial impression. True, he was surprisingly useful in the fight against the elementals, so she was in really no place to judge. "Um, thanks!" She takes the potion tentatively and guzzles it down, sighing in relief as her burns heal. "Alright, we should get moving. I want to avoid another encounter if at all possible."
