TEST DRIVE MEME
![]() ![]() A. RETRIEVAL Dreams fade slowly, and awareness returns in increments. The hum of machinery, the smell of recycled air, the murmurs of others waking up around you. The interior of the ship has been outfitted with cots for those Biggs and Wedge retrieve from the Dream Width. Outside of the makeshift infirmary, windows set into the walls of the worn lounge area offer a view of space. It’s time to meet your fellow new arrivals who have been brought together on Biggs and Wedge’s airship. None of you know how you came to be here or where you are going, and the door to the cockpit is locked as the pilots focus on navigating the treacherous obstacles of the Dream Width. You might as well take this moment to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers. B. CURTI CENTER There’s an almost overwhelming aura of excitement in the tower as researchers rush to document this unprecedented number of interdimensional travelers. Over the commotion, the leaders of the Center struggle to explain, ‘Welcome to Vaikuntha. We don’t know why you’ve been brought here, but this is your new home.’ The staff will do their best to help the off-worlders settle in. They answer the questions they can, provide maps and pamphlets about the world and the destinations within it, and even guide the arrivals to a neighborhood where housing has been provided for you. Yes, due to the strange influx of arrivals, you’ll be expected to share, but the Curti staff are doing the best they can under the circumstances. Experiences like these bring people together. Perhaps you are the only one here from your world, but at least you are not alone in this experience. Others are right beside you, learning the same information, planning trips to visit the same new cities, checking out these Job things, and settling in to their new (temporary) homes. C. UP IN THE SKY There’s a whole new world to explore. It’s almost enough to distract from the fact that there’s one place you can’t go- home. You are on an Airship, the main mode of transportation between the major cities of Vaikuntha. While the majority are owned by airlines, perhaps you hitched a ride with a friend that has their own. You can go anywhere in a matter of hours — One can only hope you don’t have motion sickness. D. GUILDS Proud representatives of the Guild are lined up, ready to demonstrate their skills for the new initiates. Make sure to stay behind the designated line, this might get dangerous. So you want a new Job? You'll have to first travel to the Guilds, sign the papers, go through the orientation and introductory lectures, and get basic training. Afterwards, you can freely chat and practice with your fellow members, celebrating your new powers, and checking out your new wardrobe. E. LET'S BE ADVENTURERS Separated from all of your material possessions, connections, and everything you know, and really, what you’re left with is time. Better try to make the most of it. Enough expository banter. It's explorin' time. Maybe instead of spending every day in your room, you'd rather spend it living it up in the city of Lavode, or betting on Chocobo Races in Sparks Goldsaucia. Or maybe you'd rather go and explore the caves and ruins near Arito. With Airships and Chocobos at your disposal, you can go nearly anywhere! F. SIDEQUESTS Maybe you’re telling yourself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ But wait, you did. At least it pays. It all started when you checked the Quest Board. All you wanted was a few gil to spend, and here you are in the wild, hunting for a Malboro Vine. Or maybe you are in some ancient and decrepit ruins looking for an artifact. Or you could be asked to be janitor for a week. Consider yourself lucky though, at least you don't have to do that alone. G. GET A JOB (THE OTHER KIND) You’ve got a Job, but Claire keeps sighing and muttering about layabout space-people not earning their keep, so it might be time to seek out Employment as well. There are plenty of opportunities to earn some gil in Vaikuntha, no matter where you choose to settle down. Your iMog slate includes listing for employment opportunities. Hopefully you can find something you can live with so that you can start saving up for an airship or the security payment for your permanent housing. H. MOGNET *Ding!* You’ve got Mog-Mail! Thankfully, you can instantaneously chat with your friends around the world thanks to you iMog Slate. And unlike old-fashioned Moogle Letters, you can even send messages to everyone in a blink of an eye! However, despite the change in technology, the old tradition of Mognet Strikes have never gone away. Nobody knows any more whether the Moogles have legitimate reasons to go on strike or if they are just lazy. But today, Mognet is down, and to get information you have no choice but going to the public boards or risk message corruption and mishandling. I. RANDOM ENCOUNTER The ground trembles, and out of nowhere, something hostile appears! You were minding your own business walking around, and suddenly monsters attacked you! Time to put to use the skills you've learned with your Jobs! Will you try to fight on your own or seek help? And remember, you die in random battle, you die FOR REAL. There’s no shame from running from enemies that are a higher level than you! J. WILD CARD Feeling inspired to create your own prompt? The power is yours! |
No worries, I picked up on what your auto-correct failed to set down!
[ Hunk almost jumps out of his skin with Shiro's flat-out statement that they should get an airship. Because he wants an airship. Well, to fix an airship and to know how it works and maybe to fire some laser cannons, but... that's basically the same thing! ]
They're really expensive though. [ He checked. Oh boy, did he check. ] We could run through the wilderness Paladinning for people, or even get, [ He scoffs. ] normal jobs, but...
That'll take time. [ He grins ear to ear, the siren call of airship engines tugging at his heartstrings, especially if he's as completely removed from Voltron and the Galra as it seems. ] You're still the leader, so how much of a long haul should I plan for?
Excellent, I figured but wanted that joke to be clear.
At least a few years, [He pulls himself out of deep thought and nods once.] Just in case.
If we get to return sooner than that we'll have prepared for the worst. And having some long term goals will help us stay oriented no matter what happens while we're here.
[Boy does he need some kind of goal that's far off to ground him. Or his mind will race off grabbing all the scenarios it can run through of what's going on back home and where the lions are. He crushes the worries before they can do more than be shapeless ideas with a sigh.]
We could think of it as a bit of rest break. New world and new ideas. [At that he relaxes completely with a tired laugh and a grin of his own. Actual cities to settle into. Day to day life. All things he has almost forgot how to do.]
Still...a normal job. I haven't had one of those in a long time. [Being a Garrison Pilot was far from normal.] This is going to take a lot of getting used to.
no subject
Do... do you want a normal job? [ He stares at Shiro for a moment, as if he had three heads. ] I figured you'd just join up with some military and fly their airships better than they can! But this is sort of a vacation.
For me, I think just getting away from the war and the Galra for a bit will be enough. I want to keep helping people. [ It's his favorite part of what they do, the smiles on people's faces, and the less deadly parts of adventuring. ] And since I can keep doing that with foodie fu... [ He smiles, and then breaks into a light chuckle. ]
But why are there always monsters? Every time we go anywhere, something wants to kill us.
no subject
I want to continue our work. [It's what he does best. He thinks over the idea of a military job again and adds in a thoughtful tone of voice.] As an independent force. Miltary means loyalty to a cause I might not always agree with.
We have to make tough choices at times but the responsibilities and the decisions are always on us. [Not on someone further up the chain or further down it. Maybe he prefers his hands on the controls a bit too much to give it up easily. He won't examine that right now.]
I like working with our team and the idea of gathering allies for the cause of bettering the world instead of fighting a war....that's my vacation.
no subject
Have I told you lately how awesome you are? Because you're really awesome. [ He grins and lets out a sigh of relief that they're on the same page. ]
So I've been thinking. [ More like anxiously agonizing, but those hairs are more easily split than the two hues on Shiro's head. ] Airships are really expensive, and now that I know you're here...
[ He looks hesitant, embarrassed even. ] What if we crowdsourced it? Whole greater than the sum of its parts and all that. Other people probably want one as much as I do!
no subject
It will give us more of an advantage when the time comes to focus on getting it. [He is thinking far into the future. With how expensive a ship is he could easily see a coalition formed of various people to achieve it and whatever goals were associated with it.]
I already made a few allies...Have you met a man named Noctis? [He’ll have to drop Noctis a line and let him know he found at least one of his team.]
He promised to keep an eye out for any of the team. I promised to do the same for his.

[ And then Hunk realized he'd been waving his arms and gesturing with a gunblade still in his hand. Oddly enough, he was pretty used to it already, and it was a far cry from the weight of his Bayard's heavy blaster. He chirps out a little "oopsie" and squeezes a series of pressure switches around the grip, sending it clacking and compressing into a smaller, more carry-safe form. ] Magitek is really cool. [ He sheathes the blade in a holster at his back, trying to get used to having so many blades on his person. ]
But me, I haven't made many allies... [ He brings his hands closer to his chest, as if his fists were about to start playing an excited patty-cake. ] I'm making friends instead! [ And he starts rubbing his hands together and cackling like some sort of mastermind of joy and mirth. Honestly, getting allies sounded like preparing for war, and he was not really about that. ]
no subject
I can send you names and descriptions for Noctis and his friends. Provided the moogles don’t got on strike again. Anyway, he already has ours. But yes, he’s human.
...I think I’ve covered everything I know outside of testing these two jobs.
no subject
He nods at the plan to get Hunk up to speed on Noctis's group, and... does a slight double-take at the concept of a moogle strike. Strikes aren't supposed to happen more than once! But he shrugs it off, as he's learned to do with many things.
But he finds his mind veering back towards their stay in this world. How they'll be forced to learn so much and fight these terrifying monsters. ]
Shiro how, uh... how do you make this all look so easy? [ He looks to the ground, sighing. ] You're a great fighter, an ace pilot, an amazing leader, and you dropped out of the sky like it was nothing. [ He grumbles, kicking lightly at the dirt beneath his feet. ]
Me? I'm having trouble just swinging a sword. [ Which is why he's been focused on the gun part instead. ] It's a lot easier to throw myself into danger when I'm inside a heavily armored space lion.
no subject
You'll get there. It's just going to take some time. ...and that was my best jump all day. You should have seen my first attempts. [He laughs, quietly and continues on,]
I didn't start out great at anything. And I didn't get here on just my own merits. I had great teachers and mentors to show me the way. ..and to level with you, having you here is making it a little easier for me to deal with all of this upheaval.
That doesn't change it's going to be a struggle. If we take this one day at a time, while being mindful of the possible future...I think you'll do far better than you think you will.
no subject
When Shiro said that having him of all people made all this easier for him, not only did he looked flattered, tears welled up in the corners of his eyes. ]
Yeah, and who knows, maybe I'll be the one saving you from danger! [ He laughed, but was completely serious, because Dragoon didn't look sturdy. It looked pointy, but... ]
Oh, and since we both have classes that use these big swords, do you wanna try and practice together? [ Hunk doesn't recall Shiro ever using a sword, which means they should be on pretty equal footing. Hopefully. ]
no subject
[He looks up at the sky briefly as he calculates what weapons he does know. Hand to hand, and the Galra gladiator sword.]
I'll have to go switch before we start. ...I think we'll be about evenly matched. I'm a lot slower as a Paladin. It seems to ignore some of my own speed when I have the job equipped. [He pauses, unsure if he should voice his concern but it comes out anyway.] ...actually. Have you noticed anything strange when you equip a job? I've talked to a few people and I haven't seen a single new Dragoon get motion sick. You'd think a few of us would.
Jumps are fast and you come down just as quickly.
no subject
But the excitement begins to taper off as Shiro talks about the quirks of the Dragoon and Paladin jobs. Well, the excitement is still there but it takes a different, simpler form... ]
I have, actually! I still know physics and mechanics and all that, but I've only felt like Vaikunthan Magitek makes sense when Magitek Knight is active- [ His tone veers into apprehension, because he's still a bit of a hazard with it now. ] ...otherwise my hands are nothing but pinkies and I'm a hazard with that gunblade.
But Gourmand? [ The apprehension turns into full-on discomfort... ] I don't know if it made me a better cook... [ His voice hushes, still audible but nearly a whisper. ] ...but sometimes I think I'd know just how to hit something to save the cookable parts. Like a butcher.
[ The whisper fades, and Hunk just lets out an audible, concerned whine. He picked the weirdest, most upsetting asterisk possible, and he's only sometimes okay with it. ]
no subject
...You aren't facing any of this alone. I'll be right here with you every step of the way. Whatever comes up.
[He shifts so he can look him directly in the eye. He'll have to keep a sharp eye on Hunk's progress with Gourmand. So far the jobs seem like the Lions but without sentience of their own. They give to the user and the user is granted more power and skill over time.
But they just don't know enough to fully trust anything.] I know you're worried about it. ...we'll keep an eye on this. For now let's get started on handling two handed swords. You won't be a hazard with a sword for long.
It just takes practice. I meant it when I said you'll get there.
no subject
I... [ He gains a bit more confidence in himself. ] I figure if you can get used to using that Galra-tech arm like you do, I can figure out a sword. [ He chuckles just a bit. ] But I still think I'll be slow no matter what- you, Keith, and Pidge could run circles around me any day.
no subject
[He claps his shoulder one more time and steps back.] Now I'll go swap jobs so we can get this practice started.
Give me five minutes and I'll be back. While I'm gone, take a few practice swings of the sword but this time feel how heavy the weapon is and how long it takes to complete your swing.
no subject
N-no problem! Take your time! [ Hunk laughs, a bit nervous and forced. Is this really happening? Is he going to spar with Shiro? Five minutes never actually means five minutes, it's always less, which tells Hunk he has to get it together, and fast.
So he starts talking to himself as soon as Shiro is out of sight. Not too loud though, he doesn't want to attract any staring. ] Okay, yeah, this is all fine. Just in a crazy weird fantasy world with just one of my friends and no Voltron, no Lions, no Bayards, nothing.
[ He double checks his iMog Slate to triple-verify that he is using Magitek Knight. ] Of all the jobs here, I picked the one that makes me cook and eat my enemies and one that makes me use a gun-sword.
[ He strolls with all the tension of someone who has no idea what he's doing over to a barrel of training swords, and grabs two larger, two-handed ones, and returns to where he and Shiro were talking ] I could've picked the one with a real gun, but no, why would I do that?
[ Hunk drops the second sword to the ground with all the poise and grace of a wrecking ball, and starts taking some practice swings. With every exhalation, with each word getting more exasperated his swings got harder. ] They can have magic sword bullets and people can summon crazy beasts but they can't figure out how to get rid of reloading in a normal gun?! Come on, Vaikuntha, where are your priorities?
[ And then he sighs and directs all of his attention into practice swings with the sword. ]
no subject
By the time he returns, four minutes later, Hunk is swinging away and doing what he can only call stress venting. He approaches slowly, letting him get it out of his system. Shiro retrieves the other practice sword from the ground and cleans it off.]
Well, if they couldn't figure it out. You can. And you could still pick up the job with the gun, it would just have to go into the reserve slot.
Got the feel of the blade?
[He pivots, turning away from Hunk and swings his own practice sword right to left, and reverses it, cutting left to right. He winces at the end. It's a heavy blade. He's really going to feel it when they're done training. Shiro turns back to him.]
Definitely much heavier than any blade I've ever used before...if we were back home I could wield this with just my right arm. But it's lost that extra strength here and I don't know why.
no subject
Shiro's swinging the sword. Talking about it. It must not be as big of a deal as... that arm. It was weaker? ]
I mean, it's still a weird Galra prosthetic, right? How much weaker is it? Can it even get stronger without muscles? [ Hunk takes another swing of the blade, vertically like he was dropping an axe onto firewood. His eyes go wide as gravity takes hold, and he barely stops it from slamming into the dirt. ]
I... I think I'm figuring this thing out! And I could get the gun one, but... [ He looks sheepish again. ] I don't want to split my attention between too many things. [ He picks up the sword and takes one more practice swing, this time upwards diagonally- fighting gravity seemed harder than moving with it. ]
