A. RETRIEVAL

Dreams fade slowly, and awareness returns in increments. The hum of machinery, the smell of recycled air, the murmurs of others waking up around you.

The interior of the ship has been outfitted with cots for those Biggs and Wedge, and some helpful Heroes of Light retrieve from the Dream Width. Outside of the makeshift infirmary, windows set into the walls of the worn lounge area offer a view of space.

It’s time to meet your fellow new arrivals and your rescuers who have been brought together on Biggs and Wedge’s airship. The other newly-awakened people have no idea how they came to be here, but now's a good time as ever to introduce yourself to the others on the airship and glean what information you can. The experienced outworlders who helped pull you from your memories may be able to get you caught up to speed.

B. CURTI CENTER

The researchers at the Curti Center are pretty used to this right now, though there's still no good explanation for the influx of interdimensional travelers from the Dream Width since earlier this year. "Please step into the lobby for a quick survey. We have just a few routine questions, it's invaluable to our research so we do ask you indulge us..."

The staff will do their best to help the off-worlders settle in. They answer the questions they can, write down all proffered information they can about the arrivals' homeworlds, provide maps and pamphlets about Vaikuntha and the destinations within it, and even guide the arrivals to a neighborhood where housing has been provided for you. Yes, due to the strange influx of arrivals, you’ll be expected to share, but the Curti staff are doing the best they can, considering they have offered to permanently house all of the outworlders here.

Experiences like these bring people together. Perhaps you are the only one here from your world, but at least you are not alone in this experience. Others are right beside you, learning the same information, planning trips to visit the same new cities, checking out these Job things, and settling in to their new homes.

C. UP IN THE SKY

There’s a whole new world to explore. It’s almost enough to distract from the fact that there’s one place you can’t go- home.

You are on an Airship, the main mode of transportation between the major cities of Vaikuntha. While the majority are owned by airlines, perhaps you hitched a ride with a friend that has their own. You can go anywhere in a matter of hours — One can only hope you don’t have motion sickness.

D. GUILDS

Proud representatives of the Guild are lined up, ready to demonstrate their skills for the new initiates. Make sure to stay behind the designated line, this might get dangerous.

So you want a new Job? You'll have to first travel to the Guilds, sign the papers, go through the orientation and introductory lectures, and get basic training. Afterwards, you can freely chat and practice with your fellow members, celebrating your new powers, and checking out your new wardrobe.

E. LET'S BE ADVENTURERS

Separated from all of your material possessions, connections, and everything you know, and really, what you’re left with is time. Better try to make the most of it.

Enough expository banter. It's explorin' time. Maybe instead of spending every day in your room, you'd rather spend it living it up in the city of Lavode, or betting on Chocobo Races in Sparks Goldsaucia. Or maybe you'd rather go and explore the caves and ruins near Arito. With Airships and Chocobos at your disposal, you can go nearly anywhere!

F. SIDEQUESTS

Maybe you’re telling yourself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ But wait, you did. At least it pays.

It all started when you checked the Quest Board.  All you wanted was a few gil to spend, and here you are in the wild, hunting for a Malboro Vine. Or maybe you are in some ancient and decrepit ruins looking for an artifact. Or you could be asked to be janitor for a week. Consider yourself lucky though, at least you don't have to do that alone.

G. GET A JOB (THE OTHER KIND)

You’ve got a Job, but Claire keeps sighing and muttering about productive members of society and helping support the local economy, so it might be time to seek out Employment as well.

There are plenty of opportunities to earn some gil in Vaikuntha, no matter where you choose to settle down. Your iMog slate includes listing for employment opportunities. Hopefully you can find something you can live with so that you can start saving up for an airship or the security payment for housing elsewhere in the world.

H. MOGNET

*Ding!* You’ve got Mog-Mail!

Thankfully, you can instantaneously chat with your friends around the world thanks to you iMog Slate. And unlike old-fashioned Moogle Letters, you can even send messages to everyone in a blink of an eye! However, despite the change in technology, the old tradition of Mognet Strikes have never gone away. Nobody knows any more whether the Moogles have legitimate reasons to go on strike or if they are just lazy. But today, Mognet is down, and to get information you have no choice but going to the public boards or risk message corruption and mishandling.

I. RANDOM ENCOUNTER

The ground trembles, and out of nowhere, something hostile appears! Is that battle music playing?

You were minding your own business walking around, and suddenly monsters attacked you! Time to put to use the skills you've learned with your Jobs! Will you try to fight on your own or seek help? And remember, you die in random battle, you die FOR REAL. There’s no shame from running from enemies that are a higher level than you. And they say, those that party up will live to party on!

J. LOVE IS IN THE AIR

All the mistletoe would have come in handy here...

As January gives way to February, stores and streets are decked in red, pink, and white. Posters line the Curti Center walls advertising Speed Dating events and offer to send flowers with anonymous or signed letters to outworlders and Curti Center employees - though there is some suspicion that a handful of received were never requested by the sender. Who cares! Some romances need an extra push!

For the less adventurous types, the love-o-meters stationed at just about every hallway can predict your romantic (and platonic, if you so wish) future with just 100 gil, or even measure how good a potential match between two people will be. Is there any scientific backing to their calculations? That's not important.

[Eventually he'll be willing to acknowledge Chara is Nearly But Not Quite Grown Up, and thus not to be treated like a tiny child, but he's going to indulge as long as he can.. perhaps simply for the novelty of being able to again. Life was not generally so merciful as to return the dead, after all, and if this were a dream...

Well. It was a strange one, full of details and things he wouldn't ordinarily think of. Like simple white teeshirts and hoodies.]

Ah? I wonder who's dream it is, then. Mine or yours?

[His tone is both wistful and thoughtful, but philosophy on the ground in public is probably not the best, better reserved for tea, biscuits and if ever possible, butterscotch p--

The thought derails immediately and crashes somewhere in the vicinity of 'Asriel's here too'.

For a solid minute or so, Asgore simply stares at Chara, as if he can't quite process the possibility that he might not have back one child, but both. Maybe he can only take so many shocks in one day! He's not a spring goat anymore, after all.

It takes him a little longer to formulate a word, though he seems to start and then stop himself several times. EVENTUALLY:]

Is.. Is that truly so? How can both of you be ...

[The anomalies in the timelines.]

... No. If something has somehow returned you and Asriel then I ... I don't want to know why. I will be grateful for it instead.

[His son was alive. Chara was alive. What place must this be, to do such things? To bring back most (...Toriel where are you..?) of his lost family, to somehow free the monsters, and to a world already full of humans and monsters both, living in harmony..]

[personal profile] 4got10 2019-01-21 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think it might be someone else's. Which is a scary thought, if you think on it too much.

[Though at the time Chara didn't mind. They can't help but smile a bit at Asgore waxing philosophically. Eloquence was something all Asgore's seemed to have.

They're quiet for a moment, smiling peacefully to themselves. In an odd way, it was sort of a lucky strike to have had so much of their family - even if they were alternate universe versions - appear here.

On the other hand, it added to the urgency of saving this place, in order to save these members of their family.]

It's...a little weird. Asriel's here but a lot older. Heh, I never really thought he'd be that much taller than me.

[And then they go quiet again, before saying.]

Dad, I...I never died. Not in the timeline I'm from.

[.....Aaannd now he's going to be thinking about that. Who's dream it might be, and why it contained so many unusual things. Plus.. if they were just elements of someone else's dream, why could he think and feel and do more than just be an accessory?

... Did the people in his dreams also think and feel and have worries and hopes of their own?

New thing to keep Asgore up at night: achieved.]

Height does run in the family, but ... ah. How much older?

[The bits of quiet aren't particularly worrisome. Asgore doesn't mind a little silence now and again, it gives him time to work things out as best he can and try and utterly fail to put anything together in a sensible way that matched up to what he knew.

So far, zip, but it's been rather pleasant surprises these past few minutes instead of world endingly awful ones, so he wasn't going to fuss.

This matter of Chara not having died doesn't get an immediate response; that too needs to be thought about.]

There have been ... reports ... of something strange going on with time-space.

[Asgore's words are careful, though whether he's trying to not alarm himself or Chara remains to be seen.]

Something's been disrupting it for a while it seems, according to a few scientists. I don't understand the details, but if I have right what I do understand ... then.

Then at some point, once, we were all part of the same time and place.

[There's a small sound, not quite a chuckle.]

I suppose there must be a time and place where things had gone much nicer. I'm glad you're from there.

[personal profile] 4got10 2019-01-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's just a little past a teen.

[Chara ponders that. They didn't really get to spend that much time with this Asriel before they themselves had been pulled back out. In all truth, it wasn't really fair.

As Asgore begins to speak of time-space, though, Chara actually relaxes a little. Good. They know about it. Sort of, at least. It's clear this Asgore doesn't have much information on it, at least not as much as Chara themself has. But some knowledge is better than no knowledge in trying to talk about it.]

...There's something odd about it. I don't know if just a disruption can even account for it anymore. I think I have an idea what had been causing it. Or helped cause it, at least. But now I'm not sure.

I've met too many variations of others from back home here. There's an Asriel that's not from my timeline or yours. There's a skeleton named Papyrus here. He isn't from my timeline. There are two versions of Frisk.

[Chara doesn't bother to explain who Frisk is. They are pretty sure that it's unlikely Asgore doesn't know about the human in the underground.]

There probably was a beginning point like that. I just don't know if

[That point even exists anymore. But that's something not to really bring up right now.]

...It was a lot of small differences, from what I heard. A couple things that kept disaster from happening.

But you're always the same. ...And you're always the best dad.

[They struggle with what they really wanted to say. Chara still doesn't know everything that happened, every little thing that went towards them actually managing to buckle down and try to find a way to strike out at the humans in the outside world. But more then anything, they want Asgore to know it isn't their fault.]

I'm sorry.

[Goodness, that is a bit grown up.

All of this is definitely a whole heck of a lot to absorb, and he's going to have to take some time, find himself some tea, and really spend an evening just working through it all, but for the time being he can try to accept it all at face value. Details and so on would just have to wait.

Perhaps one of his scientists would be around somewhere. They were always reliable, for the most part!]

Ah, Papyrus. I think you'll like him, if you spend some time with him. Most everyone seems to, even if they don't say so.

[Frisk.. is not actually known by name to Asgore, but he nods as if he is perfectly aware, making a silent note to find out as soon as possible who Chara's talking about. Especially if there's two, that sounded terribly important and something he should know about.

Thinking about little differences that might have kept disaster from happening draws a slight wince. He could think of more than a few things, that had something been miraculously different, might have gone better..]

It's very kind of you to say that. But perhaps you're a little biased, hm?

[His smile is brief but fond. He was biased too! His children, both of them, were by far the best children there were.

.. A smile that fades, by degrees, and he offers a small squeeze of a hug.]

Sorry? Chara, you have done nothing wrong. There is enough sorrow in the world without looking for more to bear. Whatever has come before, good or bad..

[So much bad, and so painfully little good. So many regrets, so much lost. And for what? Had any of it ever truly been necessary? Asgore shakes his head slightly, shoving those thoughts aside.]

It has led us here together, to this place, this timeline. Perhaps that means that there's still time to make a difference for all of us.
